The Music Collection

             the last note lingers

Music has been perhaps the greatest field where my enthusiasm has tried, and has failed most profoundly, to overwhelm my obvious lack of talent. I spent most Sundays of my teenage years torturing the talented and long-suffering Bill Piercy, my ever-patient saxophone teacher, but alas, it was to no avail. I was, I am forced to admit, simply terrible.

But though I lack the necessary talents to create the vibrant harmonies that set my spine on fire, I still love my music. Live music is the best. I love its vigour, its tension and its beat; I love its harmonies and the outpourings of emotion that make up every note. I love its spontaneity and its improvisation - even the wrong or false notes.

I owe a great debt to all who sat for these works. They allowed me to visit their gigs, rehearsals, there homes and their churches, they came to my house with an enthusiasm and generosity that was a privilege to receive.
